Teaching
Vilem Petr, Research Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering Department

It is tailored for undergraduate and graduate students in mining, mechanical, civil, metallurgical, chemical  aeronautical, nuclear, petroleum, geophysical, and geological engineering.

MNGN 333Explosive Engineering I . Principles of  basic explosive engineering technologies, this course cover the chemistry of explosives, energetic of explosives, detonation, shock wave physics. Mass, momentum and energy conservation. An understanding of basic physics, chemistry, mechanics, and mathematics calculus is assumed. In this course basic descriptions of the physical processes and underlying theory  are presented in terms as useful for engineer or researches.  This course will help engineers, scientists, and students acquire the basic engineering tools needed to understand, analyze, and solve a broad range of explosive problems and practical applications. It also will cover concerned with the regulatory and environmental issues involved in the transportation, storage, and commerce of explosive materials

MNGN 444: Explosive Engineering II. This course gives students in engineering and applied sciences an opportunity to delve more deeply into the fields of explosives engineering.  Student learning will be demonstrated by their finale papers and presentations.  The class is taught as a senior seminar, multidisciplinary formatted lecture series supported by guest speakers from the academic, government, and explosives engineering communities.

MNGN 407: Rock Fragmentation .  This course gives students in engineering or applied science an introduction to drilling and blasting for rock fragmentation.  Theory and application of rock drilling: principles of rock penetration, rock-bit interactions, specific energy, prediction of penetration rate,  types of drilling and drill-bits, machine selection. Theory of rock fragmentation by explosives as well as theory of  of crushing and grinding . Design of blast for surface and underground excavation will be discussed with specific interest  in fragmentation optimization and environmental effect control.   Will have one guest speaker William D. Hissem ,who is product manager in Sandvik, Tamrock.
