Addressing the Explosives Solutions
of the Future
The AXPRO
Group performs applied and fundamental
research in explosive engineering and explosive
processing. The
research scope includes developing practical solutions
for unique applications, resolving problems of explosive
safety and handling, and the offering of continuing
education seminars and short courses.
AXPRO
Group was established in
2005 on the encouragement of industrial partners to
emphasize the unique strength in undergraduate and
graduate engineering education at the Colorado School of
Mines.
The
Departments of Mining Engineering and Metallurgical
& Materials Engineering of the Colorado
School of Mines have an established research group
investigating explosive applications such as rock
fragmentation, explosive properties, explosive welding,
explosive synthesis, and the effect of explosives on
structures and humans.
An increasing amount of work is being
concentrated on the blast design of surface and
underground blasting, explosive welding, and the
understanding of explosive properties for new explosive
materials. The research team currently consists of two
members of the academic staff - Dr.
Vilem Petr and Dr.
Stephen Liu, nine undergraduate students,
one graduate student, and one post-doctoral research
fellow.
The AXPRO
Group is currently partnered with industry,
government agencies, and other academic institutions.
