The Advanced Hazards Mitigation Laboratory is involved in
educational activities to Graduate, Undergraduate and K-12
Students. The laboratory has received generous donations
and support from PCB Piezotronics and the Colorado School of
Mines (CSM) to establish a laboratory to
teach experimental vibration concepts to graduate and
undergraduate students.
This page contains brief descriptions of the education based
activities.
"When
Buildings Move"
This K-12 Outreach Program is currently under
development. Check back for more information...
During the Spring 2003 semester we presented this program to
two local Denver Public Schools:
 |
Horace Mann Middle School (4130 Navajo St., Denver, CO) |
 |
Smiley Middle School (2540 Holly St., Denver, CO) |
Telepresence
Educational Structures Laboratory
A Telepresence Education Structures Laboratory is currently
under development at CSM. Students in Mechanics of Materials
(EGGN320), and Structural Theory (EGGN342) will have the
opportunity to experimentally verify homework problems over
the internet using live video and streaming data in the
proposed Educational Structures Laboratory. The experiments
will provide invaluable physical insight into the behavior of
structures and materials while providing experience operating
a telepresence laboratory.
A Senior Design team, consisting of 5 civil specialty
students is currently designing and constructing experiments
for use in the laboratory. The educational laboratory will be
operational for the Fall 2004 semester.
REUJAT Program
for Undergraduate Students
The NSF sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Japan in
Advanced Technologies (REUJAT) program provides support
for up to eight undergraduate research assistants annually
working on research projects focusing on advanced technology
in civil engineering (structural control, structural health
monitoring, and advanced materials). Students spend five weeks
during the summer working on research projects with
researchers in Japan. The research assistants spend
three additional summer weeks working with their research
advisors at institutions in the U.S.
CSM students Andrew Emmons and Ellen Taylor are past
participants of the REUJAT Program. Selected
